
Sue Tomkinson

Sue is a Registered Nurse (RNLD) with over 40 years’ experience working within a variety of both NHS and private settings.
Throughout her career, Sue has worked with patients with learning disabilities, brain injuries, central nervous system disorders, mental health disorders, spinal cord injuries and neurological & genetic disorders.
Sue’s nursing experience has spanned working with children, young adults and the elderly so she is skilled in assessing the needs of a diverse client group.
Sue was actively involved in the opening and managing of a specialised provision for younger clients from 18 years of age suffering from chronic neurological conditions, acquired brain injury and challenging behaviour. This included those with Autistic Spectrum Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and Asperger’s, as well as other rarer syndromes.
Her experience has also extended to caring for those with a palliative care diagnosis and life limiting illness. This has included pain and symptom management, and holistic care whilst also being able to provide support and counselling to both the patient and their wider family. For many years, Sue was involved in the Learning Disability Palliative Care Focus Group which involved the implementation of guidelines, policies and procedures specifically for those with learning disabilities who had a palliative diagnosis.
Sue has also been involved in several research projects in this area: with Kings College Hospital London, researching palliative care experiences of those in a nursing home settings especially with regards to pain and symptom management, and with Palliative Care Network Services in Birmingham, establishing a supportive care pathway document to consider the longer-term care needs of those with life limiting illness.
Sue has extensive experience in assessment planning, implementation and evaluation of patient care and has extensive knowledge of complex care packages involving brain injury clients.
As an Independent Expert Witness for the past 16 years she is skilled at writing and submitting reports and has experience of giving evidence in court in both the UK and Ireland.
